Austria: Music & Culture

Music & Culture in Salzburg, Vienna & Venice
(MUS 416 Special Topics: 3 credit hours)

General Program Description

This course will follow the "City as Text" model in that all lectures, concerts, and activities will take place not only in the classroom but also in the theaters, concert halls, archives and libraries, churches, cemeteries, coffeehouses, composer's houses in each of the three cities we will visit. Students will prepare for the course by becoming familiar with the composers, the repertoire, and the contexts for music-making and performing in each of the cities prior to the trip. Dr. Roth will provide a composite CD and listening list of repertoire, and Dr. Malkiewicz will provide a list of websites and readings related to the places we will visit.

In addition to on-site lectures, students will have opportunities to perform with the Cathedral choir in Salzburg, participate in fold dance and historical dance workshops in Vienna, and attend concerts and musical productions of various types in all three cities.

Prerequisites: Students must be Music Majors or Music Minors. All students who have taken MUS 211 and 212 will be eligible for this course. Transfer students and freshman who have not taken MUS 211 and 212 may register with the permission of Dr. Marjorie Roth.
