Nazareth Announces Veterans Scholarship

July 15, 2008

President Bush just signed a major expansion of the G.I. Bill that gives historic increases in college tuition benefits to returning troops, and Nazareth College is showing its support to veterans by announcing the Nazareth Veterans Scholarship. Nazareth’s scholarship supplements the newly expanded federal G.I. Bill by awarding up to $7,500 per year for a total of four years (possible $30,000 total) to any honorably discharged veteran (post 9/11) who has served six months active duty and is enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student. With the Nazareth Veterans Scholarship, that takes effect this fall, most veterans who qualify for increased benefits from the G.I. Bill could essentially come to Nazareth tuition free. The Veterans Scholarship is one piece of a whole package that Nazareth is offering veterans by working with several local veterans’ organizations. Congresswoman Louise Slaughter attended the news conference at Nazareth College, along with retired Major General John Batiste, state lawmakers Senator Joseph Robach and Assemblyman Joseph Errigo, Veterans Outreach Center Executive Director Tom Cray, Director of Monroe County's Veterans Service Agency James Carra and Nazareth student and veteran Sgt. Mark Hutchinson (in uniform.)

“Nazareth College is proud of our returning troops, and our college community is behind the veterans as they prepare for the next step of their lives and careers,” said Nazareth President Daan Braveman. “The new G.I. Bill gives veterans a much-needed boost in their college aid, and Nazareth wants to take it a step further, to allow the veterans a choice of a private education.”

The Nazareth Veterans Scholarship is garnering support from a former commander of the First Infantry Division of the U.S. Army, retired Major Gen. John Batiste. “It doesn’t matter what your views are concerning the war in Iraq, we need to support our troops,” said Batiste. “In fact, the way we support our returning veterans defines our national character. What Daan Braveman and Nazareth College are doing for veterans is tremendous and sets a very high standard for the rest of Rochester and Upstate New York. Nazareth College is walking the talk in supporting our veterans by providing a head start on a quality college education.”

Nazareth’s representative in Washington, Congressman Randy Kuhl, is proud to see the College’s support of the troops. “Our men and women in uniform are our nation’s heroes and they deserve a G.I. Bill that rewards their dedicated service to protect this country,” said Rep. Kuhl. “I co-sponsored and supported this legislation because it will expand the educational benefits to our brave soldiers who have served us so honorably since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.”

The Nazareth Veterans Scholarship is the latest way that the College is partnering with veterans and Rochester vet organizations to help troops return to civilian life. In the spring of 2008, Nazareth College’s School of Management partnered with the Rochester Regional Veterans Business Council, an organization for military veterans who own or operate local businesses, to hold its monthly meetings on the College’s campus.

In addition, Nazareth’s School of Health and Human Services, which consists of physical therapy, creative arts therapy, speech-language pathology, social work and nursing, is working closely with Veterans Outreach Center, Inc. in Rochester, N.Y., to provide individual or group diagnostic, therapy, and or/wellness services. Services can be provided at the Rehabilitation and Wellness Clinics on Nazareth’s campus or at the Center’s location. Nazareth’s College of Arts and Sciences has offered the Veterans Outreach Center help in its technology center, a place where vets can prepare resumes and more.
