Nazareth Celebrates 86th Annual Commencement, May 12

Nazareth Celebrates 86th Annual Commencement, May 12

Nazareth College will celebrate its 86th annual Commencement at the Blue Cross Arena in a joint ceremony with both undergraduate and graduate students receiving their degrees on Sunday, May 12. The ceremony begins at 9:45 a.m. and Rochester Mayor Thomas S. Richards will deliver the address to the Class of 2013 graduates. Nazareth has 570 undergraduate students and 486 graduate students earning diplomas, including those students with a doctorate in physical therapy.  For more information, please call Julie Long at cell (585) 389-2456 or Alicia Nestle at cell (585) 389-2457.

This year’s graduating class consists of three Fulbright scholars and one French government teaching assistant. Joshua Hurd of Livonia, N.Y., a German and French double major with inclusive adolescence education certification, will teach English at a secondary school in Germany. Leslie Johnson of Watertown, N.Y., a double major in sociology and inclusive childhood/middle childhood education, will teach be the first Nazareth Fulbright scholar to teach English in Malaysia. Ashley Yerdon of Mexico, N.Y., a German major, will participate in an English Teaching Assistantship in Germany. Daniel McDonald of Nashua, N.H., a French major, will teach French to high school students near the city of Rennes.  In the last six years, there have been 18 Fulbrights awarded to Nazareth College students.

Richards was sworn in as Mayor of Rochester, N.Y. on April 11, 2011 after winning a special election to decide the successor to Mayor Robert J. Duffy, who left office mid-term in December to become New York’s Lieutenant Governor. Prior to joining the Duffy administration, Mayor Richards was the Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of RGS, the parent company of Rochester Gas & Electric (RG&E). Before embarking on the political journey, Richards was a partner in the Nixon, Hargrave, Devans & Doyle (Now Nixon Peabody) law firm for 20 years.

Founded in 1924, Nazareth College is located on a close-knit, suburban campus in the dynamic, metropolitan region of Rochester, N.Y.
