Outline of events:

This outline is tentative and is subject to change. We will modify the schedule if we need to spend some additional time covering topics that are unclear/misunderstood. It is far more important to understand the foundational material covered in the first part of your text before going on.

  1. Ch. 1 Atoms and Molecules -- starting small with a focus on electronic structure; emphasis on orbitals and bonding

  2. Ch. 2 Introduction to Alkanes -- orbital hybridization, drawing structures, Newman projections, basic conformational analysis, isomers, physical properties, nomenclature

  3. Ch. 3 Introduction to Alkenes and Alkynes -- structure and bonding, isomers, E vs. Z, nomenclature, physical properties, degrees of unsaturation

  4. More Functional Groups and Nomenclature (excerpts from Ch. 6, 16, 17, 18, 19) -- alkyl halides, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, ethers, thiols, thioethers, carboxylic acids, carboxylic acid derivatives, amines

  5. Ch. 4 Stereochemistry -- chirality, enantiomers, diastereomers, meso compounds, R vs. S configuration

  6. Ch. 5 Rings -- advanced conformational analysis, polycyclics

  7. Conjugation and Aromaticity (excerpts from Ch. 12 and 13) -- physical consequences, resonance, nomenclature, Huckel's Rule, heterocyclic aromatics, polycyclic aromatics

  8. Ch. 15 Analytical Chemistry -- chromatography, IR, MS, NMR, UV-VIS

  9. Ch. 7 Substitution and Elimination Reactions -- SN1, SN2, E1, E2

  10. Ch. 8 Kinetics and Rates of Reaction: Thermodynamics and Equilibrium -- Hammond's postulate, transition states, intermediates, kinetics vs. thermodynamics
