Description Study Questions | Critique a Work of Fiction
This page updated on January 15, 2007. Changes are in red. |
Directions: Find and read a novel or book of short stories of at least 110 pages about a non-U.S. culture written by someone from that culture. In a 1200-1500 word essay explain why you would or would not recommend this book for reading by your colleagues in this class.
See
the guidelines in Dr. Dooley's paper, "Writing
the Critical Review"
for ideas on how to approach this assignment.
If you are not from the United States, please also exclude works from writers in your own culture. For example, if you are from Italy or Puerto Rico, please do not choose an Italian or Puerto Rican author for this assignment. The idea is to look at a culture other than one’s own.
(If you are a foreign language major, please do not choose a work from the culture/s you study as part of that major.)
See below, "Availability of books in the library."
Steps in this assignment: 1) Let me know what work you are going to read by Wednesday, 1/31 AT CLASS TIME . 2) Submit, by email, a thesis and outline of your critique on Wednesday 3/7 (our last class before spring break) or on Friday 3/16 by noon (this is the Friday during spring break). 3)
Critiques are due by Wednesday, 3/21 or by Friday 3/23 at
5:00 p.m. Length: 1200-1500 words (That is, 5-6 pages at approximately 250 words per page. If the font you use yields less than 250 words per page, your paper will have to have more pages.) Submit on paper and in electronic form (as an email attachment or on disk). With regard to details of constructing your paper, you must follow the guidelines in my "Particulars for Student Papers" document and the Winkler and McCuen manual recommended for this course. |
