About Undergraduate Studies at Nazareth

GENERAL GUIDELINES

Nazareth College awards the undergraduate degrees of Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)., Bachelor of Science (B.S.), and Bachelor of Music (Mus. B.). These degrees require a minimum of 120 semester hours. Of these, 90 credits must be taken in liberal studies for the B.A.; 60 Credits for the B.S.; and 45 credits for the Mus. B. An overall GPA OF 2.0 (unless otherwise noted) is required for graduation.

LIBERAL STUDIES CORE REQUIREMENTS

Effective for all incoming freshmen and all transfer students entering without an A.A. or A.S. degree.

  1. Freshman Seminar : Three credits, required for first-time freshmen and students transferring in fewer than 28 credits.
  2. English 101-102 or equivalent : Six credits.
  3. Modern Foreign Language (normally intermediate level, same language): Six credits for all B.A. programs, selected Mus. B. programs and for those B.S. Programs combined with Inclusive Education Program (Quadruple Certification Grades 1-9) or Adolescence Education (Grades 7-12) ( with the exception of those in Business and Marketing Education (K-12), Art, Music or Speech Pathology). Strongly recommended for other B.S. and Mus. B. programs.
  4. Perspectives I courses: Eight courses (25 credits) from those so designated, one in each of the following areas:
  5. Area I Fine Arts: Art, Music, Theatre Arts
    Area II History
    Area III Literature: English, Literature in Translation
    Area IV Mathematics
    Area V Philosophy
    Area VI Religious Studies
    Area VII Natural Science with Laboratory
    Area VIII Social Science: Anthropology, Economics, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology 
  6. Perspectives II courses: For students pursuing the B.A. degree, four courses from those so designated in four different areas, excluding the area in which the major resides, but including at least one course in Mathematics or Natural Science; for B.S. and Mus.B. students, three courses in three different prerequisites. ( Social Work, Business Administration and Accounting majors may use one Social Science course, including Economics, to satisfy PII requirements.)
  7. A Global Perspectives course
  8. Three Writing Intensive courses ( including one in the academic major) must be included in the student’s total program. Transfer students with junior status or above are required to complete only one writing intensive course and this course must be taken at Nazareth College.
  9. Successful completion of Writing Assessment through a writing intensive course.
  10. A Comprehensive Requirement and Senior Experience in the major field.
  11. Physical Education (non-credit): Two semesters.
LIBERAL STUDIES CORE MODIFICATIONS FOR TRANSFER STUDENTS WITH ASSOCIATE DEGREES

For all transfer students entering with A.A., A.S. degrees.*

  1. English Composition: Threecredits.
  2. Modern Foreign Language ( normally intermediate level, same language): Six credits for all B.A. programs, selected Mus. B. programs and for those B.S. programs combined with Inclusive Education Program (Quadruple Certification Grades 1-9) or Adolescence Education (Grades 7-12) (with the exception of those in Business and Marketing Education (K-12), Art, Music or Speech Pathology). Strongly recommended for other B.S. and Mus. B. programs.
  3. Perspectives Courses
    - One course in each of the eight areas of Perspectives I including science laboratory. (25 credits)
    - One course in each of two areas of Perspectives II, excluding the area in which the major resides. (six credits) (Social Work, Business Administration and Accounting majors may use one Social Science course to satisfy PII requirements.)
    - At least six credits in perspectives courses must be taken at Nazareth College. These two courses may be at the PI or PII level.
  4. A Global Perspectives course must be included in the total program.
  5. One Nazareth College Writing-Intensive course.
  6. Successful completion of Writing Assessment through a writing intensive course.
  7. A Comprehensive Requirement and Senior Experience in the major field.
  8. Physical Education ( non-credit): two semesters.
  • Modified liberal studies core curriculum requirements apply only for those students who have earned an associate degree ( AA or AS) from a fully accredited college or university prior to registration at Nazareth College. Documentation of associate degree completion must be in the form of an official transcript. Academic records of transfer students who do not provide documentation of having completed an associate degree prior to enrolling at Nazareth College will be re-evaluated on a course-by-course basis following guidelines of the total liberal studies core. If a student cannot complete the associate degree prior to enrolling, he or she may request a one-semester extension. Please be aware that any Nazareth College credits used to complete an associate degree will no longer be counted as part of the Nazareth College degree and GPA.
