The B.F.A. in Technical Production is a pre-professional degree offered in three emphasis areas: Costume Design, Lighting Design, or Scene Design.

In the newly renovated state-of-the-art Arts Center and Callahan Theater, students in the technical production major receive training through practical daily experience in our shops. Students hone their skills in their area of emphasis and are offered the opportunity to explore other areas of technical theatre. Beginning with the first semester, candidates work hands-on in a lab setting to build and paint scenery, create costumes from beginning sketches to a realized fitted garment, and prep stage lights and props. Students fulfill show positions such as a Show Carpenter, Master Electrician, or Wardrobe and Makeup Crew, all while taking an active part in mounting the Department’s plays and musicals.

The four year technical production program can include any area of design specific interest, technical theatre courses, Theatre History, Play Analysis, Fundamentals of Acting, Art History and the foundation of a strong liberal arts curriculum. After completing early labs and show positions, students have the opportunity to design or work in leadership roles on the department productions. Students are encouraged to attend industry conferences and pursue related summer work, while regularly using faculty referrals. The faculty work professionally both on campus and off, and hold terminal degrees in their field. To truly “learn by doing” in the classroom, lab, or in production, students reveal their potential and become well-rounded artists in their field. Upon completion of the program, graduates are skilled and employable right out of the gate! In addition to a four year resumé and a top notch portfolio, the successful candidate will take with him or her professional credits and contacts for an ever-growing networking industry.
