Patricia Carter Early Learning Center News
In mid-spring semester of 2011, the Advisory Board for the child care center, in consultation with Nazareth College administration, approved a “name change” for the center. The child care center is now know as the Patricia Carter Early Learning Center, or PCELC. All parties involved felt that the name change would better reflect the early learning focus of the program. Staff and families alike are excited about the “re-branding” of PCCCC (Patricia Carter Child Care Center) to PCELC!
National Coalition of Campus Child Care Centers Annual Conference

In April of 2011, Mimi Berry, director of the Patricia Carter Early Learning Center, and Tracy Schanor, director of the St. John Fisher Early Learning Center, jointly presented at the National Coalition of Campus Child Care Centers Annual Conference and Institute for Professional Development in San Diego, California. This national conference brings together early childhood professionals who work for campus- based early childhood programs for advocacy and professional development experiences.
The presentation, “Birds of a Feather Really Can Stick Together: Successful Campus Child Care Center Collaboration” focused on the collaboration between Nazareth and St. John Fisher’s early childhood programs. The two centers have been sharing resources, thereby increasing learning opportunities for adults and young children. Both Mimi and Tracy presented challenges, strategies for handling them, and the benefits of their successful partnership as well as information for the participants on establishing their own successful collaborations via discussion and group activities.
Specifically, Mimi presented on the highlights of this newly formed collaboration, including combined student worker training, combined opportunities using technology in the classroom, and the development and implementation of an original assessment tool (rubric) that was created for student workers to assess their performance while working in the early learning environment. This “Student Worker Performance Review” rubric was introduced at the conference and was well received by conference attendees. Many requested technical assistance in creating a similar assessment for their early learning environments. This was especially validating for the administrative and teaching staff of the Patricia Carter Early Learning Center, who spent the fall 2010 semester designing the rubric for use with current student workers.
