United Way Campaign

In March, the Nazareth College 2013 United Way campaign is slated to kick off.  This year, the Nazareth College United Way Committee has collected favorite treasured recipes from faculty and staff and put them into a  “Sharing Our Favorites” cookbook.  Many of the recipes are deemed “heart healthy” by the Nazareth College Wellness Committee.  Please help make the campaign a success by purchasing a cookbook for yourself and your family and friends.  Cookbooks are available for purchase in Office Services, the Bookstore, and the Library for ONLY $10.00. All profits from the sale of this cookbook will go the United Way campaign.

Recycling @ Naz

As one spends his or her day on campus at Nazareth College, it is inevitable that an opportunity to recycle something will occur, whether this is a recently finished cup of coffee or a copy of a meeting agenda from some months ago. However, just as there are many opportunities to recycle on campus, there are an equal number of questions surrounding the issue. The following are some frequently asked questions about recycling on campus along with their answers.

What can I recycle?
Items that can be considered recyclables include plastics, aluminum cans, paper, cardboard, and glass. Ideally, these items should not have any food waste on them in order to prevent contamination of the recycling stream. For more information on what and what not to recycle, please visit the following link: Do's and Don'ts of Recycling

Where do I recycle a particular item?

Recycling bins are located throughout all academic buildings, residence halls, dining facilities, and office spaces on campus. Currently, there are various bins on campus such as the tan Greenprint @ Naz containers, various blue bins, and other recycling centers with Nazareth College logos. Cardboard and paper can be recycled in the containers labeled “Paper.” Plastic beverage containers, aluminum cans, and glass can all be recycled in containers labeled “Plastic.”. E-Waste recycling centers are also on campus which allows one to recycle compacts disks, old cell phones, empty ink cartridges etc. General office recycling bins such as ones found under desks can contain commingled recyclables as long as they follow the aforementioned guidelines.

Are the items I am recycling actually being recycled and what happens to recyclables once they leave campus?
Yes! Items are collected by Facilities staff and placed in recycling dumpsters located behind Kearney and Lourdes residence halls. Commingled recycling bins are sorted and items are then placed in the appropriate recycling dumpster. It is the continuing goal of Nazareth College Facilities to ensure that the greatest volume of waste is diverted with ongoing training and education of staff. Once recyclables are picked up by Waste Management trucks, they are then taken to the Monroe County Recycling Center to be sorted and processed.

What is the vision for recycling at Naz in the future?

Currently, an audit of recycling on campus is being performed to investigate the strengths and weaknesses of the existing recycling program. In the near future, the program is going to be revamped to include better locations of recycling containers as well as more uniform containers and labels to signal what items can be recycled where. Furthermore, ongoing education initiatives such as tours of the High Acres Landfill and Monroe County Recycling Center will also be available for students, faculty, and staff who are interested.

What can I do to further the cause?

Sustainability initiatives like increasing recycling can only be achieved with enthusiasm and participation of the masses. If you would like to know more about recycling on campus or have an interest in continuing to “green campus,” please contact Ben Stracuzzi, the Nazareth College Sustainability Intern, at bstracu3@mail.naz.edu.
