The José Limón Dance Company is the second performance of the 2009-2010 season in The Year of the Arts Center, which encompasses its unprecedented weeklong opening celebration September 25 – October 2, the spectacular 2009-2010 subscription series season October 30 - May 16, and the launch of the Nazareth College Arts Center Dance Festival, July 10 -17. 2010. The Nazareth College Arts Center has been the premier venue for world-class dance in the region for over 41 years.

On November 6, the Limón Dance Company presents a program at Nazareth College Arts Center, which not only spans six decades of great dance making, but is also a celebration of the 100th birthday of one of its dearest teachers, Nona Schurman. As a part of the José Limón Dance Company’s mission to support young talent, the November 6 program at Nazareth will open with a sneak preview of new work by company member Jonathan Frederickson, set to a provocative score by Henryk Górecki – Kleines Requiem für Eine Polka, op.66. This preview is followed by Mr. Limón’s incomparable masterwork The Moor’s Pavane – a retelling of the Othello story that is known the world over as one of the greatest dances of the 20th century. The program closes with a major revival of another Limón masterwork, There is a Time, restaged and directed by Limón’s associate artistic director, Roxanne D’Orléans Juste. This lyrical dance of the circle of life is partnered in composition with an original score by Norman Dello Joio, which in 1957 won the Pulitzer Prize for Music.

Program details:

There is a Time – choreography by José Limón and music from Norman Dello Joio*. The entire work is, both choreographically and musically, a theme with variations. The choreographer used as his theme a large circle, which, at the opening of the work, fills the stage and moves majestically as if to evoke the interminable passage of time. This circle is seen repeatedly in many guises, rhythms and dramatic shapes, always making allusion to the text from Chapter 3 of Ecclesiastes and its evocation of human experience. There is a Time was first performed April 20, 1956 at The Juilliard School of Music by the José Limón Dance Company.

* “Mediations on Ecclesiastes,” commissioned for José Limón by The Juilliard Music Foundation and its festival of American Music. This score earned the Pulitzer Prize in 1957.

The Moor’s Pavane (Variations on a theme of Othello) – choreography by José Limón and music from Henry Purcell with an arrangement by Simon Sadoff. Though subtitled “Variations on a theme of Othello,” The Moor’s Pavane is not intended as a choreographic version of Shakespeare’s play. In the form of a Pavane and other dances of the high Renaissance, the legend is told of the hapless Moor, his wrongly suspected wife, the Moor’s treacherous friend, and his wife. The four characters portray the tragedy of “Everyman,” and the dance is, therefore, timeless in its implications. The Moor’s Pavane’s first performance was August 17, 1949 at the American Dance Festival, Connecticut College.

The Edge of Some World – choreography by Jonathan Fredrickson and music from Henryk Górecki. The Edge of Some World will have its first performance at the Nazareth College Arts Center on November 6, 2009. The Edge of Some World is a place of transition, the doors are the vases, the keys are the yellow flowers, the willingness to cross over to the other side of the lock. The choreographer, in his third season with José Limón Dance Company, is also a dancer in this work.

The José Limón Dance Company is renowned for its dramatic expression and technical mastery. Now in its 63rd year, the company demonstrates both the timelessness of José Limón’s works and the strength of his vision that leads the Company. Founded in 1946 by José Limón and Doris Humphrey, the dancers are now led by Carla Maxwell, who worked closely with Limón before becoming the artistic director in 1978. Over the years, the Company’s commitment to producing and presenting programs that balance classic works of American modern dance with commissions from contemporary choreographers has yielded a repertory of unparalleled breadth. The Company is the living legacy of the movement technique and philosophy of theater developed by José Limón and his mentors, Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman, whose innovative works have been recognized as great masterworks of American dance. In addition, the Company commissions new works and acquisitions from other master choreographers, including Garth Fagan, Clay Taliaferro, Doug Varone, Mark Haim, Ralph Lemon, Donald McKayle, Murray Louis, Kurt Jooss, Suzanne Linke, Lar Lubovitch, Meredith Monk, Alwin Nikolais, Daniel Nagrin, Anna Sokolow, and Jiri Kylián.

In its first half-century, the José Limón Dance Company achieved many important milestones: it was the first group to tour under the auspices of the American Cultural Exchange Program (1954), the first dance troupe to perform at Lincoln Center (1963), and has had the honor of appearing twice at the White House (1967 and 1995). A recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Millennium Grant,

the Company initiated a program to expand its legacy with a major initiative providing support to independent choreographers and reconstructing modern dance masterworks that are in danger of being lost. The José Limón Dance Company is the performing component of the José Limón Dance Foundation, which was awarded a 2008 National Medal of Arts, the nation’s highest honor for artistic excellence, given by the President of the United States.

Nazareth College Arts Center Student Rush Tickets:

The Nazareth College Arts Center Student Rush Ticket program is the best deal in town. Area students, with valid student ID can attend outstanding dance, theatre and international entertainment at the Arts Center for only $5 per show! Arts Center Student Rush Tickets are available for all non-sold-out shows – beginning an hour before the performance time. Students must pay cash for all tickets to receive this special offer. Students are limited to one Rush ticket per student ID. Student Rush Tickets are not available to family shows. Student Rush Tickets are orchestra and value section tickets only. Nazareth College students, with valid ID, will continue to receive one free ticket per performance.

Nazareth's H1N1 Flu Prevention Measures

(Posted September 1, 2009)

With the fall semester underway, Nazareth College is taking preemptive measures against any possible outbreaks of the H1N1 Flu virus. A group of faculty, staff, and students has been appointed to prepare for and respond to H1N1 issues as part of the H1N1 Preparedness Team. The team will concentrate most of its efforts on preparation and prevention such as sending out “booster” messages to students, faculty, and staff on a regular basis with information on how to stay healthy and what to do if they become sick. For more information about the H1N1 flu virus, visit the Student Health Services web site under “about the flu.”

Commonly referred to as the “swine flu”, H1N1 is a new influenza virus that has been spreading from person-to-person worldwide. While most people who have contracted this virus have recovered without medical treatment, students that notice the onset of flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, headache, runny nose) are asked to : 1) contact health services by phone at 389-2500; 2) not go to class or work. Residential students whose families live relatively close to campus will be asked to go home until symptoms have disappeared. This self-isolation is necessary to prevent spread of the virus. Nazareth College asks that its community be mindful that this is a worldwide pandemic and to be particularly flexible in the expectations of students and employees who become ill.

As part of the Nazareth College’s H1N1 preventative measures, there will be additional alcohol-based hand sanitizing stations at various locations around campus and additional cleaning of frequently used surfaces such as doorknobs, hand rails, office counters, and lab keyboards. Regular updates from the H1N1 preparedness team regarding prevention strategies to combat the virus will also be available.

The following is a list of tips for keeping yourself and other members of the Nazareth community healthy:
• Stay informed about the status of the virus. Visit the Student Health Services web site . Additional information can be found on the Center for Disease Control’s web site .
• Wash your hands thoroughly and often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing.
• Cough and sneeze into your shoulder or the crook of your elbow instead of your hands. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth to reduce the spread of germs.
• Don’t share drinks, cosmetics, cell phones, etc., and avoid close contact with those who appear sick.
• Talk with health care professionals about whether you should be vaccinated for the seasonal flu.
• Know the signs and symptoms of the flu. These may include body aches, a fever of 100 degrees or higher, cough, sore throat, headache, and runny nose.

Founded in 1924, Nazareth College is a coeducational college with undergraduate and graduate studies in the liberal arts and sciences and professional programs in health and human services, education, and management. The College is located on 150 scenic acres near Rochester, New York, and currently enrolls approximately 2,000 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students.
Naz Students "Fight the Bite" Family Weekend, Oct 24

Nazareth College is proud to present an opportunity for students and their parents to “Fight the Bite” during the Family Weekend Extravaganza: Rock the World! event on October 24 from 9:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. This special event benefits Nothing but Nets, a world-wide organization committed to fighting malaria in Africa by buying bed nets. The goal of this event is to raise $2,000 which would buy 200 bed nets. The event will start with desserts in the Cabaret and “Fight the Bite” will take place in the Shults Center located on the Nazareth College campus, 4245 East Ave., Rochester, N.Y. 14618. Tickets cost $3 and children 10 and under are free. For more information, contact Caitlin Schultz at cschult9@naz.edu.

Inspired by ESPN columnist Rick Reilly, Nothing but Nets is a global, grassroots campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, the leading killer of children in Africa. Reilly challenged his readers to donate at least $10 for the purchase of an anti-malaria bed net which led to the creation of the campaign by the UN Foundation in 2006. Each year 500 million people are infected with malaria and it is the cause for 20% of all childhood deaths in Africa.

In her concept statement, The Way of the World director Lindsay Reading Korth stated, “The best manipulator wins. We don’t live in a world where good naturally triumphs over evil, or where love prevails, or where virtue is rewarded financially. Society and nature will not, in and of themselves, protect the weak or even promote the common good. In fact, bad behavior is often rewarded. In order to succeed we must outsmart the bad and stupid alike and each individual must create and follow his own moral dictates. Luckily, it’s all a game or dance – and in the playing/waltzing of it, there is great delight.”

The Nazareth College department of theatre arts stages four productions each season. For its 2010 edition, the Princeton Review named Nazareth College 6th Best College Theater in the nation – up from 9th Best College Theater in the 2009 edition. Nazareth College earned this distinction prior to the renovation of Callahan Theater based on the quality of the theatre arts program including creative and production teams, actors, technical expertise, set design and costumes. The quality of Nazareth productions will be greatly enhanced by the new proscenium stage, fly system, lighting and other upgrades to the Arts Center.

In order to take full advantage of the new fly system in the Callahan Theater, the Nazareth College department of theatre arts is bringing in Mary Griswold of Chicago as guest scenic artist. Griswold’s designs were last seen in Rochester, New York at the Eastman Theatre Opera.

Morial will present a keynote lecture titled, Closing the Gap: Privilege, Power and the Implications of Poverty, on Thursday, October 15, 2009 in the Shults Center Forum located on the Nazareth College campus, 4245 East Ave., Rochester, N.Y. 14618. The lecture will take place at 6:00 p.m. with a panel response to follow at 7:00 p.m. Flake will present a lecture and reading at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 16, 2009 also in the Shults Center Forum. These events are free and open to the public. For more information call the office of multicultural affairs at (585) 389-2073.

Born in New Orleans, Morial has led a distinguished professional career that has spanned 25 years. His many roles include entrepreneur, lawyer, professor, legislator, New Orleans mayor, President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and CEO of the National Urban League. He has performed these roles with excellence and is one of the most accomplished servant-leaders in the nation. Morial’s father was the first African-American mayor of New Orleans making politics an important part of his life. Following in his father’s footsteps, Morial has tried to build on what his father worked so hard to accomplish, insisting that 35% of the city’s contracts go to black-owned companies. During his tenure, Morial also helped return the NBA franchise to New Orleans by leading negotiations that relocated the Charlotte Hornets. Morial received a bachelor’s in economics at the University of Pennsylvania and a doctorate from Georgetown University.

Flake is the bestselling author of six books, including The Skin I’m In (1998). She is the winner of multiple Coretta Scott King Honor awards and is one of the most authentic voices in young adult fiction. Flake originally went to school to become a pediatrician, but soon changed to an English major. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in English and spent 18 years working for the college. She is now a full-time author and has gone on to write many books. Her other publications include, The Broken Bike Boy and the Queen of 33rd Street (2007), Bang! (2005), Who am I Without Him? Short Stories about Boys and the Girls in Their Lives (2004), Begging for Change (2003), and Money Hungry (2002).

These events are co-sponsored by Nazareth College’s office of multicultural affairs, School of Education, Marie Callahan Reading Clinic, Sara Varhus, vice president of academic affairs and NYSACE PDK Chapter 1080.

The purpose of conducting the Helen C. and Walter Cooper Institute on Urban Education is to contribute to the development of academic equity and excellence. Preparing students to teach all children requires increasing their knowledge base and guiding them to develop the capacity to change school practices that fail to equitably engage all students, families, and communities.

Founded in 1924, Nazareth College is a coeducational college with undergraduate and graduate studies in the liberal arts and sciences and professional programs in health and human services, education, and management.
