Documentary filmmaker and author Gerard Thomas Straub had a distinguished career as television producer of shows such as General Hospital and The Doctors before embracing a vocation that has brought him face to face with suffering people around the world. Now Straub “puts the power of the film at the service of the poor,” and his presentations in colleges, universities, schools, and churches across the country and abroad are meditations in images and words.
In films such as When Did I See You Hungry (2002), Rescue Me (2003), The Fragrant Spirit of Life (2008), and Mud Pies and Kites (2011), Straub challenges viewers by presenting with realism and compassion the human face of poverty around the globe. He is the author of The Sun and Moon over Assisi (2000, 2008), When Did I See You Hungry? (2002), Thoughts of a Blind Beggar (2007), and Hidden in the Rubble (2010), based on his experiences in Haiti during the aftermath of the catastrophic 2010 earthquake.
