MGT 410 - Management Ethics

Course Description

Students develop the ability to recognize, analyze and apply potential solutions to ethical and moral issues in business, to examine various ethical theories and moral reasoning commonly utilized to aid the decision making process, and to examine various corporate cultures and their structural procedures that support or discourage sound ethical and moral decision making.

The course offers a variety of Community Based Research and Project Based service learning opportunities through the department's 3+ year partnership with the Community Place of Greater Rochester.  These include

Roc the Day (RTD)

RTD is an annual fundraising event coordinated by the United Way. In their own words they explain the initiative:

ROC the Day is a 24-hour, online event that provides you an opportunity to support not-for-profit organizations doing great work in the nine-county Greater Rochester area. Just go to ROCtheDay.org, a secure online giving platform, to contribute to any participating not-for-profit organizations. All money given on December 12 will help local people and organizations. Library Development

CPGR would like to partner with the class to have a student team identify and procure a meaningful library for the Parsells Avenue location to support the various after school program literacy initiatives. In this engagement project MGT 410 students be expected to do the following:

  1. Meet with identified youth workers, agency professionals, and CPGR youth to determine library priorities.
  2. Create an action plan for book procurement based on these priorities.
  3. Acquire as many books as possible and research additional possibilities to provide CPGR upon completion of the project at the end of the semester.  This group will set a BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) with the agency partners about the number of books they will attempt to get by the end of the semester. 
  4. Write a report for the agency about team outcomes based on criteria provided by Dr. Leigh.

 

STEM Lab

In this engagement project MGT 410 students would partner with CPGR to enhance the youths’ STEM resources by furnishing a room at Parsells Avenue with scientific lab equipment. This project would include the following:

  1. Facilitating a focus group on youths’ STEM interests;
  2. Creating an action plan based on the focus group data;
  3. Conducting a drive/fundraiser/friend-raiser to secure additional equipment for the STEM lab.
  4. Write a report for the agency about team outcomes based on criteria provided by Dr. Leigh.

 

Youth Athletic Clinic & Campus Tour

In this student initiated project students partnered with CPGR to conduct a focus group with the youth to learn their ideas about what they want in a sports workshop and visit to campus. The team, which was a cross-class team from MGT 41001 and MGT 41002,  worked virtually and collaboratively to host 35 youth from CPGR on campus in November. Their academic output included a project planning guide for future athletic workshops with the community.
