CYD 202 - Youth Empowerment in Service
Course Description
This course provides students the opportunity to enhance their critical
thinking skills, explore their responsibility as member of the
off-campus community, and expand their personal values and ethics
related to service from a liberal arts and interdisciplinary
perspective. Specifically, this course explores the connection between
civic engagement, academic coursework, and youth issues presented within
the local community. The class offers students the opportunity to
participate in youth-led service experiences to enhance campus and
community service-learning partnerships.
Service Component
An 8 year partnership with the County of Monroe and the City of Rochester’s youth leadership program has led to the creation and establishment of “Y.E.S. Youth Engaged in Service” (how can you say no to yes?) partnership that includes 10-12 youth leaders and Nazareth College students. The youth leaders attend and co-lecture in a minimum of 6 classes per semester and together they, along with the Nazareth College students plan, implement and evaluate service learning project for the entire community. These events include Stepping Up to Solutions a youth leadership conference, Global Youth Service Day, and Cardboard City and a series of community-based service-learning projects.
