What is an RA?

An RA is formally called a Resident Assistant. This is a student staff member in the Department of Residential Life whose job is to make life in the Nazareth College residence halls enjoyable, educational and supportive of the academic experience. They are expected to assist the department in upholding the Residential Life Mission Statement. RAs have many different roles. They are peer counselors, community builders, academic resources, programmers, and administrators. RAs spend a significant amount of time getting to know residents as individuals and generating enthusiasm as they bring students together to create floor and hall communities. A Resident Assistant encourages the growth of responsible community living; helps plan educational, social, cultural, and other types of programs; and provides information about the Nazareth College and the Greater Rochester Community. Finally, RAs are expected to be strong team players. They must display a commitment to the development of an effective living/learning environment.

Who can apply?

Candidates for RA positions must be full-time Nazareth College of Rochester students and be at least a sophomore the term they assume the job. Candidates must have a 2.4 GPA when applying and at least 2.4 cumulative GPA the spring term prior to starting the job.

What is the remuneration?

The remuneration package includes a single room and the 15 Meal Plan at half price for new staff members.

Will an RA Position affect my Financial Aid Package?

The benefits of the RA position will probably affect financial aid packages of those who receive aid. The law considers RA benefits as financial aid. For most students on aid, this replaces some awards such as work study and loans. Please check with the Financial Aid Office for details.

How does the RA Selection Process work?

In addition to submitting an application, RA candidates go through a rigorous selection process. The interview process is divided into three parts and includes different kinds of interviews. The first part is a four hour group interview and exercises during which the ADs and current Resident Assistants evaluate candidates in a group setting. A Residential Life Staff Director and a Resident Assistant or Graduate Resident Assistant will then do personal interviews with candidates later that day. After this phase, those candidates invited to return participate in a third interview in another group setting.

How should I dress for the interview?

As with any job interview, you are expected to dress for success. The Department of Residential Life sees the interview process as a chance to put your best foot forward. To this end, we expect not only professional dress but behavior as well.

Where does Residential Life place RAs?

RAs can be placed in every residence hall. When you apply to be a Resident Assistant, you are applying to work for the Department of Residential Life. Placement depends entirely on the needs of Residential Life and the skills brought by each candidate. The Department of Residential Life does take into consideration the preferences of the prospective student staff members whenever possible, but the ultimate decision rests with the directors.

How many RA vacancies are there?

Out of the current RA staff of forty-one people we normally expect a turnover of 30% - 50%.

What should I do to apply?

You should attend one of the information sessions listed above to find out more about the position. The application is on our Website. Please give in-depth, typed answers to all questions on the application.

What about references?

Three references are required. One should come from a friend or hall mate and the other two from a member of the faculty, staff, RA, or a former employer. All references must be turned in no later than January 29, 2014. On the Reference Form there is a section to be completed by the candidate before the form is given to the person acting as a reference. Please be certain to sign this form and complete the appropriate information.

If I have a conflict, can I miss a session?

No. Attending the interview process is mandatory. The same holds true if you are selected to be an RA. Attending Resident Assistant training in its entirety and fully participating in opening the halls is required to hold the position. Fall Staff training lasts about a week and a half and covers a variety of information. This time is critical to prepare Resident Assistants on how to serve as the best resources for their residents.

If I am selected, when does training begin?

The dates for 2014 Fall Staff Training have not been established as of yet, but this year's RAs were required to return by August 12, 2014. Students selected as RAs are also required to stay until halls close at the end of each semester and to come back early in January to help prepare for opening. All these and other important dates will be included in the Resident Assistant Contract if you are selected as an RA.

If I have been documented for an incident, can I still be a Resident Assistant?

Student behavior does play a role in the selection of RAs. It is our desire that all applicants be in good standing with the Office of Student Conduct. If you currently have a sanction, you should discuss that with the AD in your Individual Interview. Students who are on Deferred Removal from the residence hall or Deferred Removal from Nazareth College are not eligible for the RA position.

Will my profile in an online community such as Facebook, MySpace, etc. affect whether or not I will he hired?

Candidates may want to remove anything posted online which might negatively reflect or hurt your chances in any job application. Social networking sites have gained popularity among hiring managers because of their convenience and a growing anxiety about hiring the right people, researchers say.
