Nazareth College Receives $120,000 Federal Grant to Enhance Asian Studies Course Offerings
Nazareth College is pleased to announce that it has been selected to receive a $120,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language Program (UISFL), to enhance Asian studies at the College. The grant will support strengthening the course offerings in Asian studies by creating 10 new courses in a number of disciplines as well as enhancing the teaching of Japanese and Chinese, and adding Hindi. The grant will also allow Nazareth to offer its students the option of choosing Asian studies as a minor.
The Asian studies program will be an interdisciplinary endeavor examining the history, political economies, cultures and languages of people of Asia through courses offered in several departments: anthropology; English; history; religious studies; and a senior capstone seminar in Asian studies.
"Nazareth College is pleased to be selected as a recipient of the UISFL grant," says Associate Professor in the department of religious studies and grant project director Joseph Schaller. "This is an exciting period of growth and change for Nazareth College and this endeavor will aid in shaping the college's core educational mission to meet the challenges and realities of the 21st century and beyond."
"Nazareth College is committed to international education as evidenced by our establishment of the Center for International Education, the implementation of our new Emerson Language and Cultural Resource Center, and now the enhancement of our Asian studies program through the UISFL grant," adds Nazareth College President Daan Braveman. "We are excited about the development of all our international education initiatives and are committed to growing in this area for years to come."
