Superintendent of Monroe County Jail Moves to Nazareth's Top Campus Safety Post

Nazareth's Director of Campus Safety Robert Maldonado
Nazareth College is pleased to announce that Robert Maldonado, superintendent of Monroe County Jails under Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn, has accepted the position of Nazareth's new Director of Campus Safety. Maldonado has more than two decades of service as a law enforcement professional in the Greater Rochester area, serving on the executive staff of the three largest law enforcement agencies, including the New York State Police, Monroe County Sheriff's Office and the Rochester Police Department. Maldonado starts at Nazareth on May 1.

"My 25 years in law enforcement have prepared me well to move on to the campus safety director's job at Nazareth," says Maldonado. "It is a natural extension of my career in the public sector, and I look forward to the challenge of incorporating established safety practices with innovative ideas for security on campus."

Maldonado is also an adjunct professor of criminal justice at Rochester Institute of Technology, giving him a clear understanding of how the security function serves the college campus environment.

"The entire Nazareth community can be confident that our safety rests in the capable hands of Bobby Maldonado and his team," says Nazareth President Daan Braveman. "His successful track record in law enforcement along with his top-notch expertise in all facets of security leaves no doubt in my mind that he is the right man to lead our Campus Safety Department."

Nazareth's commitment to making a difference in the community is also something that presents a familiar climate for Maldonado. He says, "It is an added bonus that consistent with President Braveman's vision of campus-wide civic engagement, I will continue to work in an environment that embraces civic responsibility."

After earning a bachelor's degree from Cornell University and his master's in criminal justice from SUNY Albany, Maldonado began his law enforcement career as a trooper with the New York State Police in 1981. In his 21 years on the force, he also held the positions of investigator, senior investigator, lieutenant, uniform captain and captain of the NYS Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, retiring from that post in 2002.

He then took on the role as deputy chief of operations for the Rochester Police Department under former Chief Robert Duffy in 2002. He was responsible for 538 sworn officers and more than 40 non-sworn employees who provide direct police services to more than 230-thousand citizens.

A year later, Maldonado moved to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office taking a top post as superintendent of Monroe County's Jails. Under his leadership, the New York State Sheriff's Association granted the Monroe County Jail accreditation for the first time in the department's history. He leaves the Monroe County Sheriff's Department on April 28.

Maldonado resides in Webster with his wife and three children.
