This pre-performance lecture is free and open to the public.
It makes a lot of sense for The Merchants of Bollywood to be presented at the Nazareth College Arts Center because it falls under two key areas of its mission – international entertainment and dance.
There will be nonstop dancing and music in this production. Dance has been an essential element of Bollywood films since the industry's emergence in India in the 1920s. The type of dance featured in the early films was based on classical Indian dance. In contemporary films, Bollywood dance is in a style of its own – borrowing heavily from Western free form as well the classical dance traditions of India. It has definitely been impacted by globalization, making the choreography as familiar as it is exotic.
It is important to note that The Merchants of Bollywood is also a musical with a story line centered on one of the most influential families in Bollywood – the Merchant family.
The Merchants of Bollywood offers an extraordinary look at elements of Indian style and culture. The audience will be transported by 1,000 glittery costumes, 2,000 pieces of jewelry and the original music and choreography from the biggest Bollywood movies, past and present. Choreography from many movies that some American audiences will have never seen.
What is Bollywood? It is one of the largest centers of film production in the world. Bollywood (derived from Bombay and Hollywood) is an informal term popularly used for the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai, India. Bollywood style music and dance scenes have become popular in the United States through the widespread success of English language movies like Slumdog Millionaire; Bend it Like Beckham and Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding.
