Nazareth College is pleased to host a Tobacco Policy Summit on December 4 from 9:00 a.m. – noon in the College’s Shults Center Forum. The summit was formed by the Nazareth College Tobacco Task Force and the Rochester Regional Colleges Tobacco-Free Initiative. The summit will allow representatives from several local colleges to collaborate concerning the creation and implementation of new tobacco or smoking policies. Ty Patterson, Executive Director of the National Center for Tobacco Policy will speak to the issues and concerns about going tobacco/smoke-free campus. The event is open to the entire Nazareth community as well as the general public, but please RSVP to Nicole LaRose of the American Cancer Society at firstname.lastname@example.org. Nazareth College is located at 4245 East Avenue, Rochester, NY 14618.
Local college representatives, who will attend the summit include those from Nazareth, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Rochester and St. John Fisher. The summit will serve as an excellent opportunity to learn about trends, locally and nationally as well as gain further understanding into the possibly of becoming tobacco/smoke-free campuses.
This is an important issue that is being addressed by educational institution leadership because the tobacco industry attempts to take advantage of college youth, understanding that this period is when many long-term lifestyle choices are made and solidified. Tobacco-free campuses are a growing trend across the country, approximately five-hundred and eighty-six colleges are 100% smoke free with no exceptions as of October 2011.
Ty Patterson of the National Center for Tobacco Policy (NCTP) led OTC’s tobacco policy initiative to its implementation in 2003. In addition to his duties as Vice President of Student Affairs he directed the Center of Excellence for Tobacco-Free Campus Policy beginning in 2004. In 2008 Patterson retired after 37 years in student affairs but continued to lead the Center of Excellence for Tobacco-Free Campus Policy as part time Director until the establishment of the NCTP in December 2010 when he joined the NCTP as the Executive Director.
