The Voices of Experience Program was created in 1997 by the Women’s Foundation of Genesee Valley for girl’s grades 8-12.  The program helps teenage girls visualize their own successful future, while it has raised thousands of dollars that are used to fund programs to empower and inspire girls to achieve economic self-sufficiency.  This year the Women’s Foundation is partnering with Nazareth College to enrich the experience by bringing the girls to a college campus.

Voices of Experience is a program that features accomplished women from various backgrounds speaking about their careers, education, and experiences.  The girls come to the program with a parent, mentor or teacher. The program consists of a brief presentation by the role models, an open-mike session where the girls are invited to ask questions, and reception. Role models such as business owners, police women, teachers, artists, medical professionals, and more, share real-life stories about overcoming obstacles and achieving goals. Mingling with the teenage girls at the reception, these presenters also model positive, healthy lifestyles and encourage girls to work toward their own goals.  The program helps girls, ages 12-18, learn that the future is the result of today’s actions and decisions, and expands their dreams of who they can be.  It helps them create a vision for their future and teaches them the importance of setting goals and furthering their education.

The Voices of Experience Program focuses on “life experience” for girls.  Through this program, the Women’s Foundation of Genesee Valley emphasizes the importance of a woman having an education and/or the skills to become self-sufficient.  More than 2,500 girls and women have attended this program since inception.
