Nazareth College’s Institutional Advancement Division and Nazareth alumna Joan Ewing are proud to announce that the College surpassed its goal of 5,500 donors in the Ewing Challenge. In an effort to increase the number of alumni currently giving to Nazareth College, Ewing ’55 teamed up with the Golden Flyer to sponsor a $100,000 challenge. If 5,500 donors made a gift in any amount to Nazareth College by June 30, 2010, Ewing would make a $100,000 gift to the College. Nazareth supporters made it possible, and the challenge is a success!
Joan herself knows a few things about rising to the challenge. Despite a passion for the arts, Joan studied chemistry at Nazareth and went on to become the first woman to complete a Ph.D. in electrical engineering at the University of Rochester in 1973. This was at a time when less than two percent of engineering doctorate recipients were women. "I had absolutely no thoughts of being any kind of pioneer," she explains. "But I remember learning from Nazareth professors that we have potentials that can be converted into actuals."
