Nazareth is honored that Margaret Smith Barnell, a Nazareth alumna from the Class of 1932, recently left endowed scholarships to Nazareth in the amount of $431,000. Born in 1911, Barnell graduated from Nazareth College with a bachelor’s degree in math and social sciences. Barnell was the chief psychiatric social worker and administrator for the Rochester Child Guidance Clinic. Her husband , Dr. John Barnell, was a surgeon at Rochester General Hospital.
Barnell furthered her education by earning a master’s from Smith College in 1939. Dr. and Mrs. Barnell liked to travel and participated in study trips to Italy through Nazareth’s Casa Italiana in the early 1980s. She attended events at Nazareth on a regular basis, always wearing her signature white gloves. Barnell passed away last year at the age of 98.
“Dr. and Mrs. Barnell didn't have any children so there is no one to thank for this gift,” said Kelly Gagan, Nazareth’s vice president for Institutional Advancement, “but I think it is so important to celebrate the philanthropy of individuals who will touch the lives of our students for decades to come.”
