Bazaar to Benefit International Students

November 20, 2009

Nazareth College’s Center for International Education (CIE) is excited to once again feature an array of worldly artifacts for sale during their 2nd Annual International Bazaar. This year, the sale will take on a special focus: the money raised will go towards helping international students complete their four-year degrees. The bazaar will take place December 1 and 2 in the basement of the Golisano Academic Center on the Nazareth College campus from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. For more information, contact Patricia Hans at phans2@naz.edu. Nazareth College is located at 4245 East Avenue, Rochester, N.Y. 14618.

“Despite scholarships and part-time jobs, many of our international students struggle to continue their education in the U.S.,” said George Eisen, associate vice president of academic affairs and executive director of the CIE. “The International Bazaar's goal is to help alleviate some of the student’s financial needs.”

Jigme Sherpa is a current student at Nazareth College from Nepal who is having difficulty paying his tuition. He is one of many international students that will benefit from the garage sale’s proceeds.

Jigme Sherpa’s Story
Sherpa grew up in a remote area of Nepal in the foothills of Mt. Everest. As a child, he and his sister used to walk five hours to school, live in a small rented room for the week, and return home on weekends. Sherpa wanted to continue his education in the U.S. because he felt the universities in Nepal were the prime targets of political parties and subject to constant closings. However, his parents did not have the means to send him abroad. Luckily, Jim Williams, an American mountain climbing guide and family friend, offered to pay for Sherpa to attend an American college. Unfortunately, with the rise of the recession Williams can no longer support Sherpa’s education. With only three semesters left, Sherpa is close to his goal of an American college education.
