Nazareth Welcomes Russian Delegates

November 17, 2009

In the summer of 2009, Nazareth College faculty and students visited Russia to share their knowledge of the city of Rochester’s child welfare system. Now it is Nazareth’s turn to welcome five delegates from Russia as they visit Rochester this week to study issues associated with elder care, child assistance and substance abuse.

Mariya Korotkova, Svetlana Matveyeva, Yelena Morozova, Yelena Petrova, and Afanasiy Tishakov will be touring various service sites in Rochester such as St. Joseph’s Villa, Center for Youth, the Monroe County Jail, and more. The delegates will be at Nazareth College on Thursday, November 19 from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. to discuss the social marketing of substance abuse prevention. This program was made possible by Open World Program and Linkages of Rochester. For more information, contact Jed Metzger, assistant professor of social work, at (585) 395-8454.

Linkages of Rochester is a non-profit organization which sponsors many types of exchanges between Rochester, N.Y. and Velikiy, Novgorod, Russia. Particular emphasis is placed on education, business, the arts and health and social services. The strong partnerships that have been established between these two cities has helped address problems associated with elder care, child assistance and substance abuse.

Since its founding by Congress in 1999, the Open World Program has enabled more than 14,000 current and future Eurasian leaders to experience American democracy, civil society and community life; work with their American counterparts; stay in American homes; and gain new ideas and inspiration for implementing change back home. Some 6,000 American host families and their communities in all 50 states have partnered with the U.S. Congress and Open World to make this ambitious public diplomacy effort possible.
