Cavanaugh Presents Talk on Economic Crisis, Oct. 22

The William H. Shannon Chair in Catholic Studies at Nazareth College proudly presents a talk by William T. Cavanaugh, the second lecturer in the Shannon Lecture series. Cavanaugh’s lecture, Christianity and the Marketplace: Confronting the Global Economic Crisis, is Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 7 p.m. This lecture is free and open to the public and takes place in the Shults Center Forum, 4245 East Ave., Rochester, NY 14618. Cavanaugh’s teachings, lectures, and writing explore the ways in which theology provides tools for understanding and responding to urgent social issues such as consumerism, the economic crisis, violence, war and torture. There is also a second informal lunchtime session with Cavanaugh on Friday, October 23 at 1:30 p.m. in the Golisano Academic Center. This year’s program, In Dialogue with Our World, features four lecturers who have heeded the call to dialogue engaging theology in conversation with other disciplines to address the urgent questions and issues facing us today.

Theologian and ethicist, Cavanaugh earned his Ph.D. in religion at Duke University and is professor of theology at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. His most recent publications include The Myth of Religious Violence: Secular Ideology and the Roots of Modern Conflict (2009), Being Consumed: Economics and Christian Desire (2008), and Theopolitical Imagination: Discovering the Liturgy as a Political Act in an Age of Global Consumerism (2002).
