Nazareth's H1N1 Flu Prevention Measures

(Posted September 1, 2009)

With the fall semester underway, Nazareth College is taking preemptive measures against any possible outbreaks of the H1N1 Flu virus. A group of faculty, staff, and students has been appointed to prepare for and respond to H1N1 issues as part of the H1N1 Preparedness Team. The team will concentrate most of its efforts on preparation and prevention such as sending out “booster” messages to students, faculty, and staff on a regular basis with information on how to stay healthy and what to do if they become sick. For more information about the H1N1 flu virus, visit the Student Health Services web site under “about the flu.”

Commonly referred to as the “swine flu”, H1N1 is a new influenza virus that has been spreading from person-to-person worldwide. While most people who have contracted this virus have recovered without medical treatment, students that notice the onset of flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, headache, runny nose) are asked to : 1) contact health services by phone at 389-2500; 2) not go to class or work. Residential students whose families live relatively close to campus will be asked to go home until symptoms have disappeared. This self-isolation is necessary to prevent spread of the virus. Nazareth College asks that its community be mindful that this is a worldwide pandemic and to be particularly flexible in the expectations of students and employees who become ill.

As part of the Nazareth College’s H1N1 preventative measures, there will be additional alcohol-based hand sanitizing stations at various locations around campus and additional cleaning of frequently used surfaces such as doorknobs, hand rails, office counters, and lab keyboards. Regular updates from the H1N1 preparedness team regarding prevention strategies to combat the virus will also be available.

The following is a list of tips for keeping yourself and other members of the Nazareth community healthy:
Stay informed about the status of the virus. Visit the Student Health Services web site . Additional information can be found on the Center for Disease Control’s web site .
Wash your hands thoroughly and often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing.
Cough and sneeze into your shoulder or the crook of your elbow instead of your hands. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth to reduce the spread of germs.
Don’t share drinks, cosmetics, cell phones, etc., and avoid close contact with those who appear sick.
Talk with health care professionals about whether you should be vaccinated for the seasonal flu.
Know the signs and symptoms of the flu. These may include body aches, a fever of 100 degrees or higher, cough, sore throat, headache, and runny nose.
