After a successful inaugural year in 2010, the Nazareth College Arts Center will present its second annual dance festival July 8-16 with expanded programming and an exciting new partnership and funder. The 2011 Nazareth College Arts Center Dance Festival will feature main stage performances from Garth Fagan Dance (July 8), Rochester City Ballet with special guest FuturPointe Dance (July 9), and Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company (July 15 & 16), in two different programs.
According to Susan Chekow Lusignan, Director of the Arts Center, “The 2011 Nazareth College Arts Center Dance Festival will do what the Arts Center does best: celebrate and showcase our region’s renowned artists, such as Garth Fagan Dance, Rochester City Ballet, and FuturPointe Dance; import the most prominent performers on the national scene (such as Headliner, 2010 Kennedy Center Honoree Bill T. Jones, of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company); connect participants with some of Rochester’s best exported talent (such as native Rochesterian Daniel Gwirtzman of the Daniel Gwirtzman Company); enhance the visibility of local dance organizations that provide instruction; provide cultural events within a framework of learning; and introduce new audiences to cultural arts programming.”
Tickets to the main stage performances are now available in person, by phone, or on-line. Tickets may be purchased at the Arts Center box office at 4245 East Avenue, Rochester, N.Y. or by calling 585-389-2170. Regular box office hours are Monday-Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets to individual shows may also be purchased online at http://boxoffice.naz.edu.
(please note: the Dance Festival subscription series – which includes all four main-stage performances at a discounted rate – is only available by phone or in person and not online)
In addition to the four main-stage ticketed performances in the Arts Center’s Callahan Theater, the 2011 festival will include many free events - Dance Walk in the Neighborhood of the Arts and then a Master Class and performance by the Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company on the Memorial Art Gallery grounds; a strolling parade with FuturPointe Dance on the Erie Canal at Schoen Place; three evenings of Dancing on the Grass performances on an outdoor stage at Nazareth; and a discussion featuring dance luminaries Garth Fagan and Bill T. Jones, moderated by Deborah Ronnen. The festival will also include lectures, Master Classes in city recreation centers, and participatory dance opportunities for the general public. For a complete schedule, see the attached master list.
About Headliner Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company
Since its inception 29 years ago, the 10-member Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company has performed worldwide. Today, the company is recognized as one of the most innovative and powerful forces in modern dance. Bill T. Jones, Co-Founder and Artistic Director, received Kennedy Center Honors for his lifetime contributions to the arts and American culture in December 2010, along with Paul McCartney, Oprah Winfrey, Jerry Herman and Merle Haggard.
The Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company will perform on July 15 and 16 at the Nazareth College Arts Center Dance Festival in two distinct programs: July 15 will feature Body Against Body and July 16 will feature Serenade/The Proposition.
Although he couldn’t attend the press conference in person, Bill T. Jones sent this statement, “I am thrilled that Nazareth College has invited the Company to participate in the second year of its dance festival. I grew up in up-state New York and it is a treat to return to the Rochester region, which is an important destination for the arts, and thanks to Nazareth College, is a leader in presenting world-class dance. We are excited to present two vastly different works from the Company's repertory - Serenade/The Proposition, a piece that reflects on the legacy of Abraham Lincoln, and Body Against Body, a program that revives my early duets with Arnie Zane. We look forward to performing on the newly-renovated, state-of-the-art Arts Center stage and to engaging the community with Master Classes, panels, and pre- and post-performance discussions.”
The 2011 Nazareth College Arts Center Dance Festival sponsors include RG&E, Deborah Ronnen and Sherman Levey, New York State Council on the Arts, Monroe County, City of Rochester and Electronic Field Productions.
President Daan Braveman is pleased to announce that RG&E has become a major sponsor the 2011 Nazareth College Arts Center Dance Festival. At the press conference on April 25, President Braveman also announced an historic partnership with the New York Dance Performance Awards (the “Bessies”). Braveman read a statement from Lucy Sexton, producer of the prestigious awards, “… Beginning in 2011, the Bessie is pleased to introduce a new award to the lineup. The intention of this award is to send New York City’s most interesting and thought provoking new choreography to presenting spaces across the country. … The recipient of the award will be presented by the Nazareth Dance Festival in July 2012. … We are very excited that the inaugural award is in partnership with the Nazareth Dance Festival and look forward to years of growth and an increasing exchange of ideas and work between, NYC, Rochester, and beyond.”
World-renowned choreographer Garth Fagan will be presented with the Nazareth College Arts Center Dance Festival Visionary Award at the festival opening on July 8.
Looking Back - From 2010 Headliner STREB Extreme Action Company

It is with the generous partnership of institutions like Nazareth College and communities like Rochester that allows exciting and generative artistic exploration to continue to flourish.”
