Biography:
Professor Sallmen has published articles in the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, Theory and Practice, Intégral, Indiana Theory Review and Music Theory Online and presented papers at scholarly conferences of the Society for Music Theory, Canadian University Music Society, Music Theory Society of New York State, Music Theory Midwest, Music Theory Southeast and the College Music Society. This work involves the music of Schoenberg, Webern, Carter and Debussy, and addresses issues such as motive, harmonic structure, atonal voice leading, and the pedagogy of twentieth-century music.

Prior to moving to Rochester, Professor Sallmen has taught  undergraduate music theory core curriculum, as well as upper-level undergraduate and graduate seminars in the music theory at the University of Toronto. He was an Interim Lecturer in Music Theory at Wilfrid Laurier University (1994) and Instructor of Music Theory at the Eastman School of Music (1995–97).
