Biography:
Dr. Carl Wiens is an Associate Professor and Program Director of Academic Music at Nazareth College. He is a native of Vancouver Canada. Dr. Wiens is a dedicated pedagogue. He teaches a wide array of music theory and music history courses, both to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as composition.

Dr. Wiens’s research centers on the search for different ways to listen to and understand music, as listeners, performers, and composers. His outlook is primarily interdisciplinary, drawing upon a number of different fields – including literary criticism, philosophy, art history, historical studies, and literature – and fusing them with the more traditional means of music analysis and criticism. His work has primarily focused on Igor Stravinsky's music, but also includes a number of other composers.

Dr. Wiens has presented papers at a number of local, national, and international conferences. He has read papers at the Society for Music Theory, the Music Theory Society of New York State, the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic, and the Canadian University Music Society. He has published in the music theory journals Music Theory Spectrum and Theory and Practice.

Dr. Wiens is also a composer, having written works for a variety of ensembles. He is currently the reviews editor for the on-line music theory journal, Gamut.
