The Moore Method
On Friday, March 4, 2011, the Robert Noyce Scholars Program and the Department of Mathematics presented The Moore Method: A Way to Teach Mathematics (and lots of other subjects).
Dr. Lee May, a renowned R.L. Moore follower and co-author of the book The Moore Method: A Pathway to Learner-Centered Instruction, visited the Nazareth College campus to discuss The Moore Method, an innovative, inquiry-based method of instruction. Dr. Lee shared his experience with the Method, secrets to implementation, and things he wished he knew when he started teaching.
2011 Mathematical Modeling Team
February 12-14, 2011
Kerry Gannon, Philip Schierer, and Lisa DiMatteo
The problem they worked on:
Determine the shape of a snowboard course (currently known as a "half-pipe") to maximize the production of "vertical air" by a skilled snowboarder.
"Vertical air" is the maximum vertical distance above the edge of the half-pipe.
Tailor the shape to optimize other possible requirements, such as maximum twist in the air.
What tradeoffs may be required to develop a "practical" course?
The Mathematical Contest in Modeling is sponsored by COMAP. COMAP, the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications, is an award-winning, non-profit organization whose mission is to improve mathematics education for students of all ages. Since 1980, COMAP has worked with teachers, students, and business people to create learning environments where mathematics is used to investigate and model real issues in our world.
