“I’m a PhD Candidate and Teaching Assistant in the Iowa State University
Mathematics Department. As a graduate
student, I’ve been furthering my math education by taking a variety of advanced
courses, both in the mathematical fields as well as related disciplines.
I’m working with an advisor, studying the structure of Hopf algebras as
part of my thesis. As a teaching assistant, my duties vary from semester
to semester. At the beginning I worked in undergraduate math help rooms and
graded papers for undergraduate and graduate level courses. Now I teach
recitation sections for various
undergraduate large lectures, and even teach my own small sections of undergraduate
classes. This year, I’ve had the opportunity to assist in the
implementation of a new precalculus course.”

"My school year has been very busy, and I really enjoy my class each year. This is my third year in fifth grade, but I'm sort of feeling like a new teacher all over again. We switched from a middle school model to an elementary model, so instead of having all 80 fifth graders for Math, I'm keeping my own kids all day and teaching all subjects. It's quite a change, but I think I will really enjoy it as soon as I get used to all of the planning! I absolutely love teaching fifth grade, and I always feel very lucky that I enjoy my work so much every day. I've been taking graduate classes part-time for the past year and a half. I have just a few classes left to complete my masters degree in Literacy. I'm really glad that I chose Literacy and I've learned a lot, but it's definitely a nice feeling to be almost done!"

“My current position requires me to collect, understand, and analyze large amounts of data to provide insight on what is happening in the different groups that comprise Risk Management. We provide support for most reporting needs for the entire department, which includes everything from preventative credit risk to our collections department as well as our operational risk departments. This requires a comprehensive understanding of the company as a whole as well as the flow of financial transactions. We are constantly working to identify trends and provide important decision-making information to the appropriate leaders within the company.”
