Web Communications

The Web Communications team works with the Nazareth Community on all aspects of their internet presence from the site to social media outlets and special projects.

Plone is the name of the Content Management System (CMS) that the Nazareth website is built on. Plone provides the site structure, templates, and administrative back-end of the website and all the pages that fall under that URL.

The advantage of a CMS like Plone is that it provides users the ability to maintain and update their own content. At Nazareth, the expectation is that the College community members are the drivers behind-and active participants in-ensuring the website is up-to-date and relevant. should consistently provide engaging content to prospective students, current students, faculty, staff, and the larger online community.

The marketing and communications department provides administration rights to the various departments and offices throughout the College for the sections of the website that fall under their domain. Before gaining these privileges, the administrator(s) must attend a training session. The marketing and communications team established the Plone Users Group for scheduled information and regular training sessions for Plone admins.

Developing Web Content

When developing written content for a website or webpage, it is critical to keep the intended audience in mind. Before writing content, it is important to ask:

  • What does the audience care about?
  • What are they looking for on this website?
  • What is the desired outcome from this interaction?

Key Points:

  1. It must engage the visitor.
  2. It should be relevant, brief, and to the point.
  3. It should not contain large chunks of unformatted text.
  4. Other content can include images and multimedia files, data files, documents, and PDFs. Make sure you have sized images appropriately for web-viewing. An image should be large enough to look good on screen (at a screen resolution of 72 ppi) but small enough to ensure the page will still load quickly for the user.

What is SEO? Why is it Important?

SEO stands for "Search Engine Optimization."

Search engines (e.g., Google, Bing, and Yahoo!) help users find webpages on any given subject. They index webpages in databases and list them in the search results in order of "relevancy." The best way to ensure that pages are relevant and optimized for key search engines is to populate them with content that is relevant to the keywords that the target audiences search. To rank more highly, page content and page titles should be written using the language and words that searchers are likely to enter into search engines.

The marketing and communications team recommends that the Nazareth community pay careful attention to the natural language their audiences use to describe programs and take care to mimic that language in web content.

The online environment is becoming increasingly competitive, and the institutions that perform SEO well will have a decided advantage in gaining visitors to their sites.

Some SEO Best Practices:

  1. Include the main keyword or key phrase of the article in the title of that article.
  2. Use tags for images and other content.
  3. Link to anything you reference.
  4. Utilize the meta description tag.

Analytics Primer

Web analytics is about monitoring how visitors use different pages and features on a website. Analytics allow webmasters to watch the browsing habits on a site (i.e., popular pages, exit pages, time on site, etc.). Analytics also show where the traffic is coming from, and if the traffic is coming from a search engine, one is able to see what search term a visitor typed in (i.e., keyword analysis). This sort of information is valuable in helping to identify both problem areas and opportunities.

Analytics can help inform decision-making about the content and usability of a website. Where are visitors going? What are they ignoring? Which terms have the highest conversions rates? Google Analytics measures the Web efforts and communication strategies at Nazareth College. The Web Team actively watches site usage and traffic patterns through reporting.
