Services for Alumni

Purple and Gold

Purple and Gold

Between Smyth and the Library

Welcome Back!

Please note that you must have received an undergraduate and/or graduate degree from Nazareth College to qualify for alumni privileges. If you received a degree from Nazareth College, get your alumni card from the Office of Alumni Relations.   Bring your alumni card and current ID to the library and we’ll sign you up! ID is required to check out books, or to access information about your library record.

Book Borrowing Privileges

Loan period

3 weeks (21 days from the date of check out).

Borrowing Limits

You are allowed a maximum of 25 books at a time.

Renewals

Books may be renewed up to 3 times as long as no one is waiting for them. You can renew in person, online, or over the phone. Be sure to have your library barcode number – you will need it to access your record.

Fines

There is a 5 cent per day per book overdue charge. If checked out material is not returned, the account under which it was checked out willed be billed for the replacement cost as well as a $5.00 processing fee for each item not returned.

Holds

You may place books on hold that are currently checked out, or cannot be found on the shelf.  Holds may be placed online through the Library Catalog, or by contacting Circulation Services (585-389-2129). When held books are available, you will be contacted. We will hold books for seven days.

Reserve Materials

Materials listed as on Reserve in the Library Catalog are housed at the Circulation Desk.  Items on Reserve are restricted to two hours in-library use only.

Magazines, Journals, and Newspapers

Most journals, magazines, and newspapers owned by the library are held in electronic format.  Due to licensing restrictions, alumni access to electronic journals is restricted to on campus use only.  (Please see Electronic Resources below.)

A few hundred titles are available in paper and/or in microfilm.  Paper and microfilm periodicals are housed on the Lower Level of the library.

Periodicals in paper and microfilm formats are available for in-library use only.  However, equipment is available for scanning to e-mail or to a USB drive at no charge.

Electronic Resources

On-Campus Access

You may access our Web-based electronic resources on the computers in the library after you have received a valid library barcode from the Circulation Desk.  If your library barcode is not accepted you will need to present your Nazareth College alumni card at the Circulation Desk to have your barcode validated.

Off-Campus Access

Off-campus access to the web-based electronic services is not available to alumni due to licensing restrictions.  However, if you are not able to come to campus, try these resources, available to the public:

ERIC - For Education research from early childhood through higher education, and related fields, from community services to psychology, from public policy to social work.

PubMed - Biological Sciences, especially medicine and related fields, including the full spectrum of health sciences occupations and therapies.

In addition, you may wish to investigate settings on Google Scholar and WorldCat.  Both can be set to flag resources available through libraries in your area.

Your local public library is also a valuable resource.

Research Help

A librarian is available for consultation at the Information Desk near the computer area on the Main Level most of the hours that the library is open.  Trained library student workers are also available at the Information Desk to help you get started.

Reference librarians also staff the Ask a Librarian service linked to the library's home page, which offers many different ways to ask for help with research, including online request forms, e-mail, chat, telephone and text.

Or, submit a request through the Online Search Service, also available through Ask a Librarian.  In an online search, a librarian prepares a packet of resources for you, tailored to your information needs and annotated to show what is available through our library.

Interlibrary Loan (ILLIAD)

Interlibrary loan services are available to alumni for a fee of $7.50 per request.  More information regarding interlibrary loan services for alumni is available here.

Photocopy Services

Photocopy machines are available on the Main Floor near the entrance, as well as on the Lower Level.  The photocopiers are self-service.   Photocopy charges are posted.  Users are responsible for adherence to copyright laws.

Color printing from a USB (flash) drive can be done at the photocopy machines.  Charges apply and are posted.

Media Resources Services

Media Resources services are provided for college-related purposes to current Nazareth College faculty, staff and students only.
