Program Goals

Classroom

Our primary concern is to prepare international students for academic study at Nazareth College or elsewhere. ALI curriculum takes students from beginning-level English to university-level English. We strongly believe that students must develop a wide variety of language skills to be successful and to fully participate in university classes.  Through reading, writing, speaking, and listening, we give students opportunities to improve fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary.

Letchworth State Park

Outside of class, U.S. culture is introduced through conversational activities, where asking questions and sharing feelings are highly encouraged, as well as through extracurricular cultural programs including trips to Niagara Falls, local museums, and other off-site locations.

The American classroom has a distinct "culture". Study and test habits, note taking, and research skills are demonstrated and discussed. Some international students are challenged in adjusting to what is expected by American teachers and professors: becoming aware of the differences in classroom approaches is crucial to student success.

Program Details

Class Information

Classes in all sections run from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. (EST) Monday through Friday. Classes are taught in an integrated English format, stressing oral communication and collaborative learning.

Embedded in the 8-12pm class time students will utilize the Emerson Language Lab an interactive technology based foreign language instruction lab here at Nazareth.

Certification

Students successfully completing special summer course and program requirements will be awarded certificates. Certificates reflect attendance and achievement. Depending on the students home university, the completion certificate can be worth as many as three credits of study. Recommendations for further study are included at the request of the student or sponsoring organization. Students successfully completing the 8 or 15 week academic courses will have these courses listed on a Nazareth College transcript.
