At the AIEP, we offer three semesters of intensive English language preparation. The primary goal of the Academic Intensive English Program (AIEP) is to prepare international students with the linguistic and cultural skills to be successful and fully participate in university classes at Nazareth College or elsewhere in the United States.
Through instruction focused on the four domains of reading, writing, speaking, and listening, we promote English language fluency and comprehension and foster the development of a rich academic vocabulary.
Additionally, we teach and model the norms and expectations of U.S. academic classrooms. The American classroom has a distinct "culture." Study and test habits, note taking, and research skills are demonstrated and discussed. Some international students are challenged in adjusting to what is expected by American teachers and professors: becoming aware of the differences in classroom approaches is crucial to student success.
Outside of the classroom, U.S. culture is introduced through conversational activities, where asking questions and sharing feelings are highly encouraged, as well as through extracurricular cultural programs including trips to Niagara Falls, local museums, historical landmarks, and other off-site locations. All AIEP students are full members of the larger campus community; students actively participate in a variety of on-campus student-run clubs and organizations and trips to area attractions including New York City, shopping excursions, and more. Additionally AIEP students are engaged locally, regionally, and globally in community and service-learning opportunities.
Classes in all sections run from 8:30 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. (EST) Monday through Friday. Classes are taught in an integrated English format, stressing oral communication and collaborative learning.
Language Lab Embedded in the class time, students will utilize the Emerson Language Lab, an interactive technology-based foreign language instruction lab.
