About Art Therapy
Art therapy is a mental health profession that uses the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages. It is based on the belief that the creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness, and achieve insight.
The History of the Art Therapy Clinic
Dr. Horovitz initiated the Art Therapy Clinic in 2000. This initiative was established with Dean Szekeres of the School of Health and Human Services. After a successful venture co-treating Speech Language Therapy clients, the Art Therapy Clinic was established as a stand-alone clinic in 2004. The Art Therapy Clinic (15' wide x 40 ' long) is presently serviced by graduate art therapy students. The Art Therapy interns are supervised by New York state licensed creative art therapists (LCAT) who are registered by the American Art Therapy Association (ATR) and nationally certified by the Art Therapy Credentials Board (BC) . Yoga Therapy (conducted by Dr. Horovitz) is also offered in the Art Therapy Clinic. Dr. Horovitz is a registered yoga teacher with the Yoga Alliance.
This year, the clinic celebrates its 11th year since establishment.
Art Therapy: What We Do
The Art Therapy Clinic at Nazareth College offers a confidential setting for expression of feelings. Art therapists advance cognitive, emotional, physical and spiritual repair. The therapeutic process evolves from non-verbal expression into facilitation of a fuller spectrum of human communication. Each person is assessed in order to proceed in a therapeutic manner most beneficial to the individual. Art therapists are licensed professionals trained in both Art and Psychology. They are skilled in various art media, and qualified practitioners in assessment, diagnosis, research and treatment. They provide diagnostic information and consultation to allied health professionals.
