Author Amy Stewart: Flower Confidential: Behind the Scenes & Around the World in the Global Flower Market
In the global marketplace, can there be such a thing as a “socially responsible” flower?
Please join the Honors Program in hosting author Amy Stewart as she describes her quest for the secrets of the global flower market. In laboratories, airports, warehouses, greenhouses, and flower shops, Ms. Stewart discovered a remarkable intersection of nature and technology, sentiment and commerce. What have we gained, and what have we lost, in the quest for the perfect flower? Does it matter if roses have lost their scent? If lilies are bred for the convenience of the grower and not the desires of a customer? Are we better off with 209 varieties of daisies to choose from?
Come hear Stewart discuss the people, the corporations, and the technology dedicated to the pursuit of the perfect flower. You’ll never look at roses the same way again!
Prior to her evening lecture for the Honors program Ms. Stewart will present The Earth Moved -- The Surprising Secret Life of Worms at School #9 in the City of Rochester, from 9:30 a.m. till 12:30 p.m. She will speak on the importance of worms in gardening, and other interested worm-related information. The talk will be followed by a worm-bin making activity as well as a discussion with area teachers on how they could take this information into their classes.
