A just-published book, According To Us: Four Older Women Tell Their Stories by Diane Drechsler, Berdjouhi Esmerian; Barbara LaMark '57, a Nazareth College alumna; and Norma Rappl, with an introduction and chapter on How To Write Your Own Memoirs by Marjorie Baker Price, demonstrates the unique and powerful position older women express and offer through memoir writing.
It all began in the nineties when Marjorie Baker Price taught a class entitled Tell Your Story, Write Your Life at the Nazareth College Center for Lifelong Learning to seniors. Four women enjoyed the class so much that even when it stopped several years later they wanted to regularly continue getting together to write their memoirs.
Esmerian posed to the group in August of 2009 that everyone compile their stories into a book, and so According to Us was born. Marjorie Baker Price, who continued to offer the class to the group once a month through her practice, Centering Tools for Self-Healing and Empowerment, says:
“Each month participants bring a story they have written to read to an eager, supportive audience of fellow memoir writers. Each month I recommend two or three ideas that everyone can write about—or not, as they wish—or alternatively write about whatever moves them instead. Each month someone laughs, cries, surprisingly and more extensively shares what she most struggles with, what she most cares about, what she most fears, and what she most hopes for in her life.
Class members are in their seventies and eighties. They have lived full, challenging, loving, tragic, compromised, and successful lives. Through memoir writing they more greatly understand how much they have to look back on, how much they have to continue to participate in, and how much they can continue to actualize in their lives. They are paradoxically young and old; mature and simply able to live for each present moment.”
All four memoir authors and Marjorie Baker Price will be present to sign copies of the book which retails for $12.95.
The open house event is free and open to the community. Light refreshments will be served.
