The Nazareth College Opera Workshop presents a triple bill:
LA CANTERINA by Franz Joseph Haydn
THE IMPRESARIO by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Robert Strauss, stage director
Linda Boianova
,  music director

Consisting of three short operas, Opera Triple Bill is presented under the direction of Nazareth College Department of Music faculty Robert Strauss, stage director, and Linda Boianova, music director. The program will feature La Canterina by Franz Joseph Haydn, Captain Lovelock by John Duke, and The Impressario by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

"Producing these three short works not only gives more students an opportunity to learn and perform a role, but also gives them the opportunity to learn about different composers' styles," Strauss says of this year's program. "Since we're setting them in the South from the middle to the end of the 19th century, students get the chance to experience a little history as well. And audiences will love it because these three disparate works are hysterically funny, especially as performed by these talented singers!"

A comic intermezzo representing Haydn's first foray into operatic comedy, La Canterina involves a simple love triangle between the lead soprano, her singing master, and a wealthy, handsome young suitor, all observed by her mother, sung by Nazareth College Department of Music faculty member, Matthew Valverde. In Captain Lovelock, one of two operas composed by Duke, a wealthy, elderly widow wishes to marry a young army officer, as her daughters conspire with a marriage broker to show the old lady the folly of her plan. Mozart's The Impresario is a comic singspiel in one act in which an aging diva and a fledgling ingénue compete for the attention of a banker and an impresario, all the while goaded on by a wannabe singer.

Continues Strauss, "These three pieces work together in a lot of ways – they are all comedies about older women with strong personalities either in conflict or cahoots with younger women with just a strong personalities. One can also almost see the influence that Haydn had upon Mozart and the influence both had on more contemporary composer John Duke. It's even possible to believe that the character of the young soprano in the Haydn becomes the older diva in the Mozart and perhaps even the old mother in the Duke."

The cast for Opera Triple Bill consists of Nazareth College students. Appearing in La Canterina are Matthew Valverde (faculty) as Appolonia, Megan Colombo as Gasparina, Gabrielle Agostino as Don Ettore, and Casey Schmitt as Don Pelagio. Appearing in The Impresario are Catherine Sentiff as Mr. Scruples, Quinton Harvey as Mr. Bluff, Robbie Manners as Mr. Angel, Sarah Miller as Madame Goldentrill, and Hannah Teter as Mademoiselle Silverpeal. Appearing in Captain Lovelock are Reneé Ruscitto as Pernille, Gabrielle LaBare as Tererntia, Rachel Hall as Leonora, Sheralyn Fenton as Laurentia, and Alexis Scangas as Madame Kirsten.
