This workshop is for graduate level mental health practitioners and clinicians who work with children and adults.

Play Therapists across theoretical orientations often ask children to draw, paint, or engage in art activities. Art-based interventions and directives can be approached via a developmental perspective in order to allow the therapist to see the whole child. The evaluation and therapeutic interventions of the client, whether a child or an adult, can take into account the normal developmental stages of artistic expression, as well as the normal development of play, motor skills, and social interactions.

This workshop will delineate the developmental approach to art therapy, describe the normal artistic stages of development, and apply the approach to therapeutic play interventions. Participants will have hands-on art experiences to evaluate artistic development and how they apply to play therapy practice.
