Lillian Hellman's The Children's Hour, the story of how a selfish child's accusation of homosexuality destroys the lives of two young schoolteachers, was famously controversial when it was produced in the early 1930s. Unfortunately, the play's narrative still resonates with 21st century audiences, perhaps not as shocked by its themes and subject matter, but still as sympathetic and understanding of the "fear of the other" that drives so much of American life. Rich in complex characters and in its depiction of the wide range of human behavior, The Children's Hour deserves its place as an American classic by one of our greatest playwrights.
