MICROSOFT EXCEL: USING TEMPLATES

If starting from scratch is intimidating, take a look at the myriad of templates available free from Microsoft and generous users. Once you have a basic understanding of how a spreadsheet functions, you can download a free template and modify it to suit your needs.

We will explore the templates that are packaged with Excel, go to the Microsoft Office Online website to search through the available templates, and practice downloading, modifying and saving a template. We will also touch upon creating your own templates.

INTRODUCTION TO GOOGLE APPS

Google is now more than just a search engine. It offers nearly 40 powerful, absolutely free applications that require no special software and enable you to do everything from word processing to language translations. And did I mention that it's FREE?!  If you are not yet taking advantage of these free programs, this class will present you with the entire array of offerings. All that you will need to do is sign up for a free Google account, and you are ready to go.

GOOGLE DOCS

Google Docs is a free set of applications within the Google Apps offerings that enable you to do word processing (like MS Word), presentations (like MS PowerPoint) and spreadsheets and forms (like MS Excel). Where buying these programs might cost over $100, the Google Docs are free and they are accessible on line. They convert easily into Microsoft Office formats, and are far simpler to use than the Office versions. Best of all, you can share your documents with anyone, anytime. Google Docs is already being widely used on campus by a growing number of users. It is truly a great set of free tools you don't want to miss.

SMARTBOARDS FOR THE NON-ACADEMIC SETTINGS

  • Do you attend or lead meetings where displaying visuals is important?
  • Do you use flip charts or whiteboards on which to take notes?
  • Are you tired of the smell of markers or getting into a room and not having one that works?
  • Would you like a simple way in which to record everything written and drawn on your boards?

Most of the talk about the new Smartboards (interactive whiteboards) has been focused on their use in instructional settings. But one of the most useful features of Smartboards comes through their use in meetings and collaborative settings.

Using a Smartboard eliminates the flip charts, smelly markers, stacks of papers, a scribe struggling to get it all down. Attend this workshop and see how these amazing boards can transform the way in which you think about meetings. (And you can go home and tell your children that you are finally using the same technology that they are using every day in their first grade classrooms!)

  • Speed Survey (one of many online tools with more options)
  • Microsoft Word (2003 and 2007) constructed like a text document
  • Adobe Acrobat 9 (and Acrobat 8) more sophisticated but more challenging to learn
