Stewart N. Loh, Ph.D. Professor in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at SUNY Upstate Medical University will be discussing how switchable proteins constitute a unique platform for designing biosensors, functional switches, and ‘smart’ biomaterials.  Although nature provides some clues as to how proteins transform from one conformation to another, such naturally-occurring switches are relatively rare.  Our goal is to develop general mechanisms by which ordinary proteins can be converted into switches.  By doing so we can begin to leverage the rich diversity of the proteome to create molecules with hitherto unrealized functions and properties.
