The Nazareth College Biochemistry and Chemistry departments invite you to a lecture given by Dr. Todd D. Krauss, Professor of Chemistry & Optics from the University of Rochester, on Friday, November 2 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Room 012/014 of Peckham Hall.

Conformational dynamics of proteins play a central role in protein function. However, protein conformation is naturally heterogeneous and thus, for samples containing many molecules obtaining structural or dynamical information on specific conformations is quite difficult. I will discuss a relatively simple time-resolved fluorescence resonance energy transfer approach applied to characterize the folding of cytochrome c at the single molecule level. In particular, measurements of the fluorescence lifetime of individual dye-labeled cytochromes c can be used to monitor conformational transitions of the protein under partially denaturing conditions. Using this approach, it was revealed that despite an extensive literature on cytochrome c, a significantly more complex landscape of structural heterogeneity exists than has been previously thought.
