Nuovomondo (2006)

Written and Directed by Emanuele Crialese

Introduction by Dr. Stella Plutino-Calabrese

This presentation begins at 6:00 p.m. with the film beginning at 6:30 p.m., in the Casa’s LeChase Lounge. Free and open to the public. Film in Italian and Sicilian dialect with English subtitles.

Nuovomondo chronicles one Sicilian peasant family’s epic journey to America at the turn of the twentieth century. A poor farmer named Salvatore up-roots his family from their tiny Sicilian village after hearing about the fantasies of the New World, where men bathe in milk, vegetables grow to be the size of donkeys and money falls from the sky. During the voyage, Salvatore becomes infatuated with a British lady named Lucy who unexpectedly proposes marriage to him because she must be accompanied by a man in order to be admitted into the US. This film magnificently depicts the extensive process that millions of immigrants had to under-go in order to enter the New World, or il Nuovomondo.
