Lecture: Capitalizing on Urban Students’ Strengths by Mr. Anibal Soler, Principal at East High School

Today's students live in a world that is engulfed with technology. Yet a majority of our schools still operate the way they did 150 years ago when they were dealing with students who came from agricultural backgrounds.

Why haven't schools changed to better meet the needs of our digital students? Why are we not focusing our efforts on improving urban education and instruction? Why are we not focusing on meeting the instructional needs of Black and Latino students? Why are we not making schools community hubs that foster and create greater parental involvement? Those are some of the many questions Mr. Soler has and will attempt to address in his lecture.

Students from the Leadership Boys Academy will speak about their experiences and point of view as students. The Leadership Academy opened this year to 80 students that will learn about male leadership and skills to graduate in 2015. The academy focuses on specific learning styles of males, assigning local mentors, and service learning. The students also learn and have access to local colleges and local JROTC programs.
