Degree Earned:M.S. Educational Technology
"Technology is integral to the future of education, and Nazareth is the only school in the region offering that specialized program."
From blackboards to smartboards, Will Bean ’08 integrates the traditional and the high-tech in his teaching methods—something he learned while obtaining his master’s degree in education at Nazareth College. “I chose Nazareth’s educational technology program because I knew that technology would be integral to the future of education, and Nazareth was the only school in the region offering that specialized program.”
The student-teaching portion of his master’s curriculum was crucial to his experience at Nazareth. “I could integrate what I learned in the program right into my own classroom—and usually in the same week. And then I could bring feedback about what worked and what didn’t back to our class discussions.”
Bean is now an AP biology and living environment teacher for the Newark Central School District. While student teaching, he experienced both traditional teaching methods—blackboards and textbooks—as well as “more high-tech, collaborative teaching that got students motivated and engaged.” In a world where texting, YouTube, and social media are prevalent, Bean realizes you have to meet students where they are technologically.
“Education is catching up to the technologies available,” shares Bean, who is excited to be part of the process. Recently he was named “Top 20 to Watch” by the National School Boards. “My master’s degree has an implication for what I’m doing on the job. It’s making me a better teacher.”
