How do you give attention to one child while managing a class of 20? What are creative ways to engage a community of learners? How do you capture young hearts and minds and inspire them to reach their potential? The rewards and challenges of teaching in today's classrooms are many. But perhaps the biggest challenge is teaching kids with vastly different backgrounds and abilities.

Beginning in Fall 2012 we will offer a NEW education major in Inclusive Early Childhood/Childhood Education.  With this new major we will continue to offer the unique features upon which we have built our successful education programs, as well offer new opportunities for our teacher candidates.  Click here to learn more about this new major.

The current Nazareth Inclusive Childhood/Middle Childhood Education major gives teacher candidates the tools to create a successful inclusive classroom that embraces kids of all learning levels. Our faculty is unique in that we are equal opportunity educators. Rather than viewing children in a traditional manner as "normal" or "with special needs," we look at children across all dimensions of diversity and focus on their strengths. Also unique to Nazareth is our "quad certification," which prepares teacher candidates to apply for certification in four different areas of "general" and "special education." The unique features of our coursework, along with a major emphasis on fieldwork, often results in a high placement rate for our graduates.

Program Highlights

• Classes concentrate on child development, learner characteristics, differentiated instruction, multicultural sensitivity and special education.
• Students participate in a unique History and Philosophy of Education core course which examines the historical and philosophical influences on education.
• Most courses are taught on-site in local schools, and fieldwork takes place in a variety of environments (urban, rural and suburban schools and the Strong National Museum of Play).
• Many opportunities for special projects, tutoring, teaching mini-lessons, and study abroad in countries such as England, Tanzania, Wales, and France.
• Our unique "quad certification"; an Inclusive Education program for initial teacher certification in four areas, currently: Childhood Education (Grades 1-6), Teaching Students with Disabilities at the Childhood Level (Grades 1-6), Middle Childhood Education (Grades 5-9), Teaching Students with Disabilities at the Middle Childhood Level (Grades 5-9). (And in the future in four areas across early childhood and childhood education.)
