The Word: Senior Comps
The senior comprehensive experience in Communication Sciences and Disorders is more than just the Comprehensive Examination. It includes:
- The Senior Seminars
- CSD 452: Seminar in Behavior Management
- CSD 454w: Seminar in Language Disorders
- CSD 457: Seminar: Case Studies in Speech-Language Pathology
- The Comprehensive Exam (CSD 499)
The seminars are designed to integrate the information in from your theoretical coursework and your practical experiences.
The Senior Comprehensive Examination is designed to assess your knowledge across all of the undergraduate CSD professional courses. DON'T PANIC!!! The Senior Comprehensive Examination is a screening tool designed to assess the degree to which students in the final semester have retained information from coursework completed in the Communication Sciences and Disorders program. The intent of the exam is to provide students an opportunity to demonstrate that they have attained at least minimal competency in the subject matter of the discipline. In the event that this screening tool suggests a student might have a deficit in a specific area of study (up to a maximum of three areas) the student is provided opportunity in the form of follow up activities to demonstrate that minimal competence has, in fact, been achieved. In this way students are not penalized by poor performance related to any one area, and also that the examination may provide a degree of formative assessment if a true deficit is present. The intent is that all students will be successful in final completion of the assessment process. More information regarding the design of the test, the scoring criteria, and the information about how follow-up activities are scheduled (if needed) will be discussed at a meeting at the end of the semester prior to the one in which the students take the exam, and that information will also be made available through Blackboard at the beginning of the semester. Exams scores are reported to students via Blackboard, typically within 24 hours of the test being completed.
For students in the Teacher Certification Option the senior experience also includes:
- CSD 465: Student Teaching TSSLD
- CSD 468: Speech-Language-Hearing Services in the Schools
