When You're Closed Out
What should I do if I get closed out of a course in the major?
Please understand that the department does everything possible to establish course sequences that work for you. We also try to keep certain courses (ASL I & II, and Junior & Senior level courses) balanced from semester to semester so that YOU will have smaller classes and so that faculty may do more hands-on activities. The way balancing is done is through enrollment caps on some sections. Most of the time, if you get closed out of a course, it's possible to modify your schedule and keep you on track.
If you get closed out of a course in the major:
Contact and meet with your academic advisor. She or he can review your program and work with you to determine whether you MUST have the course in a specific semester, or if an alternate schedule is possible. You can help your advisor and avoid future problems if you alert them early on if you are planning to study abroad, if you are a varsity athlete, or if there are other issues that require a specific sequence.
If it turns out that you MUST have a course in a specific semester, you'll need to meet with the Department Chairperson to obtain permission to register beyond the cap for the course.
