Policies and Procedures

(The Student Handbook contains the complete Alcohol & Controlled Substance Policy.)

Nazareth college does not condone the possession, use, sale or distribution of illegal drugs. Students who participate in these illegal activities are subject to severe disciplinary action, up to and including expulsion. Drug paraphernalia, including bongs, clips, pipes, and other items used in preparing or consuming illegal drugs, is not allowed in the residence halls. Students violating these community standards will be subject to disciplinary action.

The Department of Residential Life is concerned with the effects of the use and abuse of alcohol and the quality of life in our community. As part of the Code of Student Conduct, we are charged with upholding New York State law in matters of alcohol consumption. You must be 21 years of age to possess and consume alcoholic beverages. Kegs are prohibited in all residence halls and open containers are not allowed in public areas.

The Alcohol Policy of Nazareth College reflects the New York State law, but is also meant to promote responsible use of alcohol by residents who are of drinking age. The Residence Life staff will confront any inappropriate behavior with regard to the use of alcohol. It is our goal to promote responsible alcohol use for those who are of legal age as it pertains to student development.

Occupancy of any room is limited to the student(s) assigned to that room by Residential Life. Rooms may not be subleased or lent. Cohabitation is not permitted. Residents may register guest of the same sex for overnight visitation for up to three nights. All visitors must sign in and residents are responsible for all signed-in guests. Residents are responsible for seeing that their guests follow regulations and are liable for any infractions or building damage done by the guest. There are no coed restroom facilities in the residence halls. In most buildings there are restrooms for public and visitors to use on the first floor. All floor restrooms have the sex designation of the restroom clearly indicated on the outer door. Please alert your visitors and guests of the location of an appropriate restroom for their use.

Please be certain that your guest carries a guest pass and a valid photo ID. We don’t like to dwell on the negatives, but occasionally an accident happens and we need to be able to make proper identification and emergency contact. Individuals who have been removed from or restricted entry to the residence halls are not granted overnight privileges. Please, do not put us in the position of having to discipline you for hosting such a person. Individuals who are banned are banned for legitimate reasons and this sanction is not given based on a whim. Help us uphold the community standards. The Residence Life Staff reserves the right to suspend guest privileges at any time based on the discretion of the Area Director or Director.

The new student room furniture in some areas includes loftable beds. However, homemade lofts or student’s personal lofts and waterbeds are not allowed in residence halls. If you have questions about your room furnishings, please see your AD.
The quiet hours may vary from building to building. However, a good rule of thumb is to recognize the rights of other students. Courtesy hours are in effect at all times. Televisions, radios, stereos, conversations, musical instruments, etc. should be kept at a level so as not to interfere with other residents’ study or sleep. Residents who are disturbed by noise should speak to the offending party directly. If the disturbance persists, please contact your RA or the RA on duty. Do not get into a battle of stereos or retaliate in any manner. This only escalates the situation and is not conducive to community living.
We realize there are different strokes for different folks. Dogs, cats, iguanas, boa constrictors, ferrets, etc. are fun and nice to have around and you will be able to visit them on your stay away from Nazareth. ALL PETS, EXCEPT FISH, ARE FORBIDDEN!!! We repeat....pets other than fish are not allowed in the residence halls. Fish may be maintained in student rooms in containers with a maximum volume equal to or smaller than 25 gallons.
In March of 2004, it was announced that all on-campus housing including apartments would be smoke-free starting in Fall, 2004. This change has come as a result of a student-led study into the health, safety and social impacts of smoking in our residential communities. Through this process, the medical impact of first- and second-hand smoke was considered, and the risks of smoking and residence hall fires were studied. We also looked at the results of similar changes at other colleges and universities. Almost concurrent with our study, the New York State Legislature passed a sweeping bill pertaining to smoke free environments.

Smoking shall not be permitted in any communal or non-communal space that is the property of Nazareth College. This includes all buildings, student rooms, apartments and suites, hallways, entryways, stairwells and other spaces of that nature. Students who are smoking are required to be at least 20 feet from building entrances.

Each student is expected to abide by the Smoking Policy. Enforcement will be maintained by a collaborative effort from staff, Resident Assistants, the Department of Campus Safety, and other students. Violators of this policy will be subject to the full range of institutional sanctions.

Nazareth College has a visitation policy which requires that visiting the rooms of residents be restricted to certain times. All residence halls are locked during evening hours. Guests are permitted in resident rooms:

Sunday - Thursday Noon - 12:30 AM

Friday - Saturday Noon - 2:00 AM

The College reserves the right to prosecute for trespassing any non-escorted individual in a residence hall who does not show proper identification and/or a Guest Pass.
